Swansea
- Established in the 1820’s as Waterloo Point, Swansea is one of Tasmania’s oldest towns. Many historic buildings remain. Use the Heritage Walk booklet (available from local businesses) to explore its past.
- The History Room (open 10.00 – 4.00 Tues. and Fri.) further unfolds local history.
- At the Bark Mill marvel at the Heath Robinson ingenuity used to process wattle bark for the tanning industry. In hard times bark stripping supported many east coast families. Learn too about the 1803 Baudin Expedition – origin of our many French place names.
- Fish in Great Oyster Bay.
- Swim at a nearby beach – Jubilee, Nine Mile, Kelvedon or Spiky.
- Meet welcoming locals for a game of golf or bowls.
- From October till April watch the evening return of the shearwaters at Waterloo Point.
- Browse and buy from the unique range at Swansea’s interesting small shops.
- Food and holidays go together. Indulge in berry delights, fine dining, a counter meal, or more casual snacks. Try local walnuts and olive oil.
- Picnic on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Freycinet Peninsula at Lost Falls.
- Walk to the viewing platform where the waters of Meetus Falls plummet to the valley below, then enjoy a barbecue in the nearby forest picnic area.
- Visit a winery at nearby Cranbrook or Cherry Tree Hill, or buy their wines in town.
