Our Bicycle and Motorcycle Friendly Municipality

altWhat does it mean for a municipality to be bicycle/motorcycle friendly? Of course two-wheeled visitors require many of the same things any other visitor looks for:

• prompt and courteous service;

• value for money;

• a clean and comfortable bed;

• good food, preferably featuring local ingredients;

• knowledgeable assistance.

Cyclists and motorcyclists travel with all their belongings in relatively small panniers which are vulnerable to weather and theft. Bicycles and motorbikes are valuable pieces of equipment too, often their owner’s pride and joy. These differences create a few additional needs for two-wheeled travellers.

At Accommodation

• Safe undercover parking.

• Beach towels available for loan free of charge.

• Washing done by hosts or use of a washing machine and dryer.

• Somewhere to dry wet gear other than in a bedroom.

• Evening meals available in-house;

or the accommodation is self-catering;

or within walking distance of hotels/restaurants.

• Provision of an information compendium listing suitable routes, where to buy appropriate fuel and spare parts.

At Activities

• Safe parking within sight of a staffed office or bikes safely locked away.

• Helmet and panniers stored out of sight, such as in a back office.

At Restaurants or Coffee Shops

• Safe parking on hard standing within sight of the eating area.

• Space for gear to be left without tripping up other customers.

• Shelter from the weather for bicycles/motorcycles.

Our logos indicate that a business is bicycle and motorcycle friendly. Because of the newness of the initiative many eligible businesses are yet to sign up. In this early stage, not displaying the logos need not mean that a business cannot accommodate the needs of two-wheeled travellers.
