From Triabunna marina catch the ferry to this hidden gem with its fascinating mix of history, landscape, wildlife and marine experiences.- Maria Island is steeped in history. Its cliffs are embedded with fossils from the last Ice Age, intact middens indicate Aboriginal camp sites, the penal settlement at Darlington provides insight into life for Australia’s first European settlers and old farm buildings mark more recent activities.
- Walk to the fossil cliffs, convict reservoir, hop kilns, French’s farm or the painted cliffs.
- If you are fit, climb Bishop and Clerk or Mt Maria.
- Observe endemic and introduced wildlife. The island is a great spot for bird watching.
- Dive pristine waters to the wreck of the Troy D (permit required).
- Camp overnight, but bring everything with you and take it home again.
