Getting there
By air
Tasmania has several airports that have regular commercial arrivals and departures: Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie. The terminals house car rental companies, café and bar facilities as well as the airline service and baggage counters.
Hobart is serviced by regular flights of both Qantas Link, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Tiger airlines. Hobart airport is about 15 km from the city centre. To reach the city you can travel by taxi (approx. $30) or by private transport. The trip takes around 15 minutes. Launceston Airport is about 20 km from the city centre. It has regular jet services to mainland capitals by Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Blue and Tiger. There is a regular shuttle bus and a taxi to the city costs around $23.
Devonport and Burnie offer smaller airports with regular turboprop services to the mainland. A shuttle bus operates and taxis are available at both airports.
By sea
There has been a boom in the number of visitors who want to combine
their exploration of Tasmania with the romance and adventure of a sea
voyage. We have two of these vessels operating between Melbourne and
Devonport. These ships operate both a day and night crossing, in peak
holiday times.
Devonport is the ideal starting place for your Tasmanian adventure as it allows you to complete a round trip of the state before embarking for your return journey.
By Bus
Redline Coaches www.tasredline. com.au runs weekday buses between Launceston and Swansea, the Coles Bay turn-off and Bicheno, via the Midland Hwy and the inland B34 road. Services from Hobart connect with these buses at Campbell Town, where you may have to wait depending on your particular connection. Redline also runs daily (except Saturday) between Launceston and St Helens along the A4 via St Marys. Hobart buses connect with this service at Conara on the Midland Hwy.
TassieLink www.tassielink. com.au also provides east coast services from Hobart, running at least three times per week. Some buses detour through Richmond. Buses also run twice-weekly from Launceston to Bicheno via the A4 and St Marys. Neither Redline nor TassieLink services the Freycinet Peninsula, but Bicheno Coach Service (03-6257 0293, 0419 570 293, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ) plies the road from Bicheno to Coles Bay, connecting with Redline and TassieLink services at the Coles Bay turn-off. Note that all the services are limited at weekends.
