Buckland

Buckland Church The notable feature of this small township is a number of historical buildings with particular emphasis on the Church of St John the Baptist, built in 1846. It is a fine example of colonial church construction in the English style.

The beautiful east window was designed for Battle Abbey in England on the site of the Battle of Hastings. The Abbey was badly damaged and never restored, and the window was given by the Marquis of Salisbury to the Rev. T.H. Fox, the first rector of Buckland and installed in 1849. The window features the life of John the Baptist. While the means by which it found its way to Buckland may be disputed it has been authenticated as 14th Century. Tomb inscriptions in the churchyard provide fascinating reading.

Other attractions include bushland gardens 3 km south of Buckland, and in Buckland Design in Stone, a replica of Stonehenge.   Visitor facilities include accommodatiion at Ye Old Buckland Inn (campervan friendly), and Twin Lakes Trout Fishery (at Nugent, 15 km east on Nugent Road).   Buckland also has a 19th Century tavern and a restaurant. and BBQ facilities at the sports ground.
